Deep down in the unbending South lay a town full of movers and shakers, people used to taking what wasn’t theirs.
At the far edge of that town sat a patch of land tended only by women, all of the same blood. They lived peacefully, working their roots and sowing their plans for bloom.

Among them was a quiet child, told to hush and learn. She watched as envy took hold in the hearts of the townsfolk who tried to take what the women had built. The women only smiled, offering crops and advice freely. They smiled as everything the townsfolk loved turned to ash.

“Just bad luck,” people said. “No one that sweet could have done such a thing.”

When the child asked how, the eldest woman leaned close and whispered,

“Always remember, darling — while your smile can be sweet as honey, it can also be as dangerous as a loaded gun.”
